George Washington Carver is probably best known for his work with the peanut plant, inventing hundreds of peanut-based products to showcase the value of this simple crop. But, what we are going to discover in this study is why peanuts and other legumes (plants like peas that produce a pod with seeds inside) were promoted by Carver. He recommended farmers change up what they grow in their fields each year. This is known in the farming world as crop rotation. A crop is defined by dictionary.com as the cultivated produce of the ground, while growing or when gathered, so crops are the plants that farmers grow for food. Changing what is planted each season, or rotating the crops, has many benefits for the soil.
