The temperate forest biome is one of three forest biomes found on Earth. Large deciduous trees like maples, oaks, hickories, and beeches tower over smaller trees and shrubs in the layers of the temperate forest. As you may have guessed from its name, this biome is found in the world’s temperate climate zones where rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year. In fact, between 30-60 inches of rain provides the moisture needed for large tree species to grow. There are four seasons where this biome is located, and temperatures vary depending on the time of year. Summer highs may be near 90°F while winters may see temperatures well below zero. Trees in this biome are adapted to the seasonal changes and have a dormant period - inactivity - in the winter after losing their leaves in autumn.
